9 Members of Congress Call on Assemblymember Evan Low to “Immediately Stop” Illegal Ad Spending

Mercury News Calls on Voters to “Reject Low’s disregard for election integrity”

SAN JOSE, CA — Today, a coalition of Members of Congress formally urged California Assemblymember Evan Low to cease and desist from illegal campaign activities cited in a recent complaint filed with the Federal Elections Commission, by the pro Democracy and voting rights group Defend the Vote. This comes after the Mercury News called on voters to “Reject Low’s disregard for election integrity” in a recent editorial.

“Protecting our democracy from MAGA extremists, who are eager to undermine the foundations of our institutions, demands an unwavering commitment to defending democratic principles… Upon reviewing the FEC complaint, we believe your actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for these foundational principles,” the letter reads. “This issue is of utmost importance and your continuation will demonstrate your unfitness for the office. Such actions threaten the very foundation of the Federal Election Campaign Act and jeopardize the integrity of our federal elections. We urge you to immediately stop these activities at once, and to refund from your Federal Account the total of these activities.”

Some of the top donors to Low’s assembly campaign committee include big oil and gas, big pharma, PG&E, and private prisons.

“We are grateful to these national leaders for calling out Low’s tactics for what they are: Illegal, unethical, and brazen,” Robin Logsdon, Sam Liccardo’s campaign manager said. “Our voters deserve a leader who isn’t illegally spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions from corporations like Chevron, PG&E, and private prisons.”

Liccardo is endorsed by the four largest news dailies in the region — the San Francisco Chronicle, the Mercury News, the Palo Alto Daily Post, and the San Mateo Daily Journal — more than a dozen current members of Congress, the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters, California Environmental Voters, 350 Bay Area Action, the New Democrat Coalition, CHC BOLD PAC, NorCal Carpenters Union, Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA), Defend the Vote, California High School Democrats, Latino Victory Fund and more than 120 local elected officials.
